Ten pioneering technology firms have been driven towards commercialisation in Scotland’s offshore wind sector, with the help of Caledonia and Ocean Winds.
Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult’s Launch Academy Scotland Programme is a six-month programme supporting Scottish SMEs and innovators to grow and use their technology to help meet the country’s renewables ambitions.
Ten Scottish start-ups were selected, with seven of those firms based in the North-east, and the cohort included firms in subsea robotics, geoscience, digital technologies, and long-distance drone flights.
The programme ran from November 2024 to May 2025 and supported these companies with building business cases, securing funding and trials, and providing specialized industrial knowledge such as technology development support. As a key sponsor of the programme, Caledonia provided real commercial opportunities including support in application and interview phase and one-to-one assistance where required. By the end of the programme, the company showed real growth and confidence with increased market insight, and stronger investment planning.
The programme resulted in £247,000 in grant funding raised, 9.5 new jobs created, 12 commercial contracts won, and 6 new products or services commercialised.
SMEs and start-ups play a critical role in driving the innovation needed in the offshore wind supply chain to achieve national energy ambitions. Supporting them through this important programme helps achieve clean energy ambitions while also keeping Scotland at the forefront of the renewable energy technology revolution.
